Whether you’re a private builder seeking building materials, a large scale construction company, or a do it yourself handy man, we can provide you with the supplies you need. George Archer Metals is the number one supplier of stainless and specialty steel products across Melbourne. We offer a premium selection of 304 and 316 stainless steel grades. If you’re wondering what the differences are, let us clarify for you.

304 and 316 defined

Simply put – 316 is the improved version of 304. Whilst appearing exactly the same, the improved material has a slightly higher nickel percentage as well as an added element known as molybdenum. This added component helps create a resistance to corrosion brought on by sea water and other natural elements. 316 stainless steel is generally more expensive, but can save you money in the long run due to its added durability and resistance features.

More about the different grades of stainless

Suitable for most applications, 304 stainless steel is available for the majority of our product range and is the most common stainless material consumed in Australia – making up 50 -60% of the market. As the most versatile and widely used grade, we provide 304 steel in a broad range of products, forms and finishes. More commonly, the material is used for applications such as exhaust manifolds, kitchen equipment, hardware, piping, storage tanks and wheel covers. Our steel is of the highest standard and suitable for all of these functionalities.

316 grade steel is designed for many industrial processes that require a higher level of resistance to corrosion. This grade provides the greatest overall corrosion resistance compared with all other grades of stainless. Other benefits include a resistance to chemical attack, easy fabrication, and a greater heat resistance.
